Design and Implementation of an Immersive and Adaptive VR System for the Generative Musical Composition SHARED

The evolution of immersive technologies has redefined the modes of interaction between audience, artwork and space, opening new perspectives for cultural heritage and artistic research. Within this context sits the ItARTS – Italy for Arts: Resources, Time and Space, with particular focus on the development of Shared VR, the virtual reality rendition of the laboratory conceived by Michelangelo Lupone.
The project is analysed through a critical-aesthetic lens, situating it within the broader landscape of immersive arts, participatory installations, and VR applications in cultural heritage, where the principles of collective memory, co-presence and adaptivity play a central role.
Alongside this theoretical contextualisation, the research documents the design and technical development phase of the multi-user VR prototype: an interactive immersive environment that allows users to act through hand tracking and to intervene on a shared memory totem. The architecture integrates Unity 6, XR Interaction Toolkit, XR Hands and VRMP for network synchronisation, with interfacing to Max/MSP for adaptive sound generation.
